Things in common...

To all my military friends out there, I never really think much about how different we are as military spouses until I read things like this and then it puts a whole new perspective on what we do. Even though what is written below may sound a little crazy, I think it sums our daily lives up well and I personally wouldn't want my life any other way.

The Military Wife....

They may look different and each is wonderfully unique.
But what do they have in common?
They have THIS IN COMMON!

Lots of moving---
Moving.
Moving far from home.
Moving two cars, three kids and one dog----all riding with HER of Course.
Moving sofas to basements because they won't go in THIS house.
Moving curtains that won't fit.
Moving jobs and certifications and professional development hours.
Moving away from friends, moving toward new friends.
Moving her most important luggage; her trunkful of memories.

Often waiting-
Waiting, waiting;
waiting for housing;
waiting for orders;
waiting for deployment;
waiting for reunion;
waiting for phones calls;
waiting for the new curtains to arrive;
waiting for him to come home
For dinner----AGAIN!

They call her 'military dependent', but she knows better.
She can balance a checkbook,
Handle the yard work,
Fix a noisy toilet,
Bury the family pet...
She is intimately familiar with drywall, anchors, and toggle bolts.
She can file the taxes, sell a house, buy a car, or set up a move ----
all with ONE Power of Attorney.

She welcomes neighbors that don't welcome her. Reinvents her career with every PCS; locates a house in the desert, the arctic, or the deep south and learns to call them all home. She MAKES them all home.

She is fiercely IN-dependent and somewhat hasty;
Leaps into decorating, leadership, volunteering, career alternatives,churches and friendships.

She doesn't have 15 years to get to know people. Her roots are short but flexible.
She plants annuals for themselves and perennials for those who come after them. Military Wives quickly learn to value each other. They connect over coffee, rely on the spouse-network and accept offers of friendship and favors and record addresses in pencil.

Military Wives have a common bond. The Military Wife has a husband unlike other husbands, his commitment is unique. He doesn't have a job, he has a 'mission' -- he can't decide to quit -- he's on-call for his country 24/7, but for the military wife, he's the most unreliable guy in town!

His language is foreign:
TDY
PCS
OPR
ACC
BDU

And so, a Military Wife is a translator for her family and his. She is the long-distance link to keep them informed and the glue that holds them together.

Military Wife has her moments----
She wants to wring his neck, dye his uniform pink, and refuse to move
to Siberia, but she pulls herself together. Give her a few days, a travel brochure, a long hot bath, a pledge to the flag, and a wedding picture.

And she goes.
She packs.
She moves.
She follows.

Why?
What for?
How come?
You may think it is because she has lost her mind, but actually it is because she has lost her heart.
It was stolen from her by a man
Who puts duty first
Who longs to deploy
Who salutes the flag
And whose boots in the doorway remind her that as long as he is her Military husband, she will remain his Military wife.

High tide heels...

Okay, so instead of investing in snow boots and snow suits, down here on the coast this would be our new fashion statement. I don't know if the shoes will catch on but they are pretty comical.

Family Golf Day!

So, we decided to try and go golfing with the kiddos and it worked out great. Jason and I got to play 9 holes of golf, Ethan and Rachel enjoyed driving the golf cart and they even attempted putting on a few of the greens. We all had a fun time and it's too convenient since the club house is right around the corner from our house.

Surprise mail!

Ethan and Rachel received "surprise mail" from Pawpaw and Nana today. I think the expressions on their face say it all. Ethan and Rachel say: Thank you pawpaw and nana, Rachel will be sending a card soon and Ethan wants to know if you'll send him an ambulance and fire truck to go with the police car, and when are y'all coming to their new house to play?

Mississippi Wildlife

Speaking of turtles, Jason spotted this huge one crossing the 8th fairway in our backyard (we live on a golf course). I thought the pictures turned out really well.

Post Turtle

My dad emailed this to me and I had to share it with all of you. Only in TX would you here a joke/story like this and it actually make sense. ENJOY!

While suturing a cut on the hand of a 75-year-old Texas rancher whose hand was caught in a gate while working cattle, the doctor struck up a conversation with the old man. Eventually the topic got around to Obama and his bid to be our President.

The old rancher said, "Well, ya know, Obama is a "post turtle."

Not being familiar with the term, the doctor asked him what a "post turtle" was.

The old rancher said, "When you're driving down a country road and you come across a fence post with a turtle balanced on top, that's a "post turtle."

The old rancher saw a puzzled look on the doctor's face, so he continued to explain. "You know he didn't get up there by himself, he doesn't belong up there, he doesn't know what to do while he is up there, and you just wonder what kind of a dumb ass put him up there in the first place."

Fire Marshall Ethan

Today was the "Oak Park 500", the entire kindergarten class had to make their own transportation of choice and bring it to school today. The kids made a parade with all the homemade modes of transportation. It was pretty cute and interesting to see all the creative ideas.
Before we left for school.
Waiting patiently!
Let the parade begin!

Ethan AND Rachel conquer training wheels!

What started with Ethan "just trying for a few minutes" without training wheels turned into two totally stoked kids that conquered their training wheels and now ride their bikes like the big kids. After watching Ethan for about 30 minutes Rachel decided she would try too. They've figured out that they can help each other get going and I can just sit back and watch. They are growing up too fast!

0 for 2

At 0200 Ethan woke me up so excited that he just pulled his 2nd tooth! Dang, I missed it again! We had a very noisy thunderstorm last night and that is the only thing that I can figure why he was awake to pull his tooth. Or maybe he's just that excited about losing teeth AND he's really good at math, 2nd tooth at 0200...hahaha

First tooth!

As I stated in an older post I missed Ethan loosing his first tooth. If you haven't already read the "We're Home" post, it explains it all. My friend, Kathy, took much better pictures and I wanted to share them. Thanks again Kathy for all the pictures and help, both are priceless!

Politically correct?

I don't normally get politcal with anybody other than Jason. I just couldn't hold back on this one. I could go on about who should win this election and my political beliefs supporting my stance, but I think the sign sums it up.

We're HOME!

We journeyed back to MS early Wednesday morning. Our house didn't have any damage, woohoo! It has definitely been an interesting past few days. In the last 72 hours alone I have been to the ER for a corneal abrasion, we made a roundtrip to Birmingham, Ethan lost his first tooth, and I took Ethan to the ER last night. Corneal abrasions are beyond painful and driving for 10 hours doesn't help either. My eye was so irritated from driving that infection had set in and I had to stay in my hotel room with both eyes shut for 24 hours. THANK YOU to all that helped with Ethan and Rachel, I couldn't have managed without you. While I was "keeping my eyes shut" per doctor's orders; Ethan and Rachel were with one of the families that evacuated and Ethan lost his first tooth. I'm soooo bummed I missed it. Once we got home, one of Ethan's glands swelled up to the size of a golf ball. So, I rushed him to the ER and the swelling had gone down before the doctor came to the room 2 hours later. Just a freak occurance, but worth getting the doctor's opinion. Needless to say we are glad to be home. Did I mention I did all this by myself while Jason was evacuated to Scott AFB? Yeah, he'll be home tonight and we can't wait.
